Global softwood lumber markets were mixed in the 3Q/09 - up in China and Northern Africa, while still slow in the US and Japan
Softwood lumber imports to China have increased by 81% in 2009. It is not inconceivable that China will import more lumber than Japan in 2009, a historical first. Canadian sawmills have been the major beneficiaries of this new fast-growing market.

Arkaim's Sawmill Started Full-scale Operation
JV Arkaim LLC, a large-scale lumber exporting company in Khabarovsk in Russia, made a presentation at Shinjuku Park Tower in Tokyo on November 25. At the presentation, General Director Alexander Lepihov and executive officers of the company, who were visiting to Japan, jointly with the staff of its Japanese contact point SHINRYOKU Co., Ltd., explained the current situation of the company to the Japanese guests of 22 companies or 34 people.

China: Forest industry revitalization
Five departments including the State Administration of Forestry, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Commerce and the State Taxation Administration recently released their plan for the revitalization of the forest industry 2010-2012. This will serve as the foundation for an action plan to support the industry through the current global economic crisis.

Rapid expansion of wood pellet capacity in North America drives sawdust and wood chip prices upward, reports the North American Wood Fiber Review
The wood pellet industry in North America has grown six-fold since 2004, reports the North American Wood Fiber Review. The dramatic expansion has resulted in higher costs for sawdust and wood chips in the regions with the greatest growth, including Western US and Canada.

Exports of wood chips from Australia have declined 28% in 2009 but the country is still the largest chip exporter in the world
Australia, the world largest exporter of wood chips reduced shipments by 28% during the first half of 2009. The biggest decline was that of softwood and hardwood chips to Japan, which were down 31% and 36%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2008.

Russia: Time to Be Optimistic?
Russian leaders are optimistic about the economy's outlook, perhaps for good reason. Exports have grown steadily, rising oil prices are supporting the balance of payments, and industrial production is recovering. However, domestic consumption remains weak, casting doubt on the strength and sustainability of the recovery. While Medvedev's ambitious plans for modernization could aid the recovery, they currently lack both details and execution mechanisms.

Wood costs have remained unchanged for Canadian pulp mills in 2009 despite tighter wood chip supply
The pulp industry in Canada has sharply reduced production the past two years both as a result of weaker pulp and paper markets worldwide and also because of less competitive pulp manufacturing facilities. Wood costs have increased for many plants as the result of reduced availability of relatively inexpensive sawmill residuals, according to the North American Wood Fiber Review.

Austrian National Prize Nomination for Wintersteiger AG
On October 22 the Austrian National Prize for "Design 2009" was awarded for the 38th time in the Museum Quarter, Vienna. In front of several hundred guests, State Secretary Christine Marek recognised Austria's creative industries for their services. The Austrian National Prize 2009 is awarded in a total of three different categories. WINTERSTEIGER was nominated in the category "Product Design of Investment Goods" and thus achieved a place among the top six.
