The amount of European softwood lumber products received in June 2009 decreased to 153,200 cubic meters, a 16.4% decrease compared to the previous month. Compared to last year, the amount received decreased by 7.0%. Due to price adjustment for European lumber products, arrival of European lumber, which was stable, slowed down slightly in June.
Looking at it based on country, the amount received was 63,500 cubic meters from Sweden, 42,300 cubic meters from Finland, 13,600 cubic meters from Austria, 11,350 cubic meters from Romania, 8,700 cubic meters from Latvia, 4,800 cubic meters from Germany, and 8,800 cubic meters from other countries. Compared to the previous month, the amount received from all countries decreased. The amount received from Sweden, Latvia and other countries increased compared to the previous year. The amount received from Sweden has remained favorable exceeding 60,000 cubic meters per month in this year.
The amount of laminated lumber received from Europe in June was 30,400 cubic meters, a 10.5% decrease compared to the previous month and a 5.5% increase compared to last year. Based on country, the amount received was 13,500 cubic meters from Austria and 10,700 cubic meters from Finland. The amount received from Sweden was 1,200 cubic meters, and the amount received from “other countries” including Germany was 4,900 cubic meters.
The overall price (CIF Japan Port) of European lumber products in June decreased by 3.3% to 28,223 yen per cubic meter from 29,183 yen in the previous month. It fell 30.4% compared to last year still having strong competitiveness in Japanese market. Based on the leading countries, the price was 31,472 yen from Austria, 28,061 yen from Finland, 26,108 yen from Sweden. Compared to the previous month, prices of Austria and Sweden decreased 0.6% and 5.9% respectively but Finland increased 0.9%. Compared to the previous year, the price was a 30.8% fall for Sweden, a 26.8% fall for Finland and a 26.9% fall for Austria.
The price of structural laminated lumber was 40,478 yen per cubic meter, a 4.7% fell from 42,486 yen in the previous month. Compared to last year, the price was a 24.2% decrease. The prices of Austrian products and Finnish Products were 37,631 yen and 43,710 yen, a 7.4% fell and a 0.4% fell from the previous month respectively.
